CLIPNOTES by Ben Bateson (ousgg)

Description
Fictional, estate course
Location
The Readme pins it down to New Jersey or Pennsylvania
Conditions
Far too many pins lie mid-slope, and I wouldn\'t take it any more than M*/S*
Concept  8/10
Eastern Hills is a pleasant enough fictional rendition of the style of Championship courses that dot the North-East states in their dozens. There is a strong design concept behind the layout, and the holes flow into one another very naturally: there is no doubt on the large scale that this course genuinely could exist. However, close-up, you run into the occasional absurdity (particularly around green complexes) that means you can\'t completely let go of reality.
Appearance  7/10
I liked the planting at Eastern Hills and restrained use of buildings. But there are a number of weak areas, not least the straight-extruded bunker lips and an occasional rough hand with the elevation changes. The whole course looks just a bit too straight-edged as well.
Playability  6/10
Time certainly passes swiftly, and there are a number of golfing puzzles to solve, some of which won\'t even be fully realised over a 4-round tournament. Sadly, there are also a fair number of frustrations here, not least some restricted, mis-scaled and barely-playable greens. Some rather clumsy ambient sound doesn\'t help either.
Challenge  8/10
It\'s hard to know where to draw the line here: the greens are too hard work, but the course length is short and realistic enough that putting just feels like a way to prevent you shooting a dozen birdies every round. This is not usually the sort of trait in a course that I like awarding points for, but there\'s an odd feeling that, despite the imbalance, it really does all fit together.
Technical  6/10
I\'d like to see some more work on the technical niceties that really finish a good golf course: the texture seams, the difficult bunkers, and the sound planting. Having said this, the planning of the course is second to none, and those looking for a realistic course will be satisfied.
Overall Not fully polished, but there is adequate recompense in the course\'s lifelike style. 35/50
